What a time to be alive!

Really think about it… we are under so much pressure and stress of course but we as a society now are part of generations that are starting to not only identify but also correct, even heal traumas, redefine the traditional and align with the modern adaptations. What, and who better, to describe and benefit, than us constantly evolving bohemians?!

Welcome to the first our TKM Self Care Sunday themed blogs delivng into the lifestyle of mindfulness and some of my misplaced musings. I want to start from the basics; what is self care and why do we need it, how do we know if it’s working and so much more. Click Subscribe and come along for the ride!

Let's start with what is the most universally accepted answer for what Self Care actually is. Self Care is the conscious action or actions that you take to center yourself, to manage your stress, and help you overall live a better life. The benefits of Self Care are to improve both your mental and physical health… helping heal trauma, lower risk of illnesses, increase your energy amongst other benefits. When you understand it at its most basic level like that, it’s hard to imagine anyone not wanting to partake in some Self Care but the TK Tribe is here for when they do.  We focus on Sunday to take hold of our Self Care but the hope is that you ideally learn to incorporate things into your daily life which will make overall greater long-term positive effects. Reducing stress and anxiety while boosting your self awareness and self esteem can only better your relationships outside of yourself so we are big proponents of also becoming a member of the TK Tribe to share trials, tribulations, and even new ideas and support to others.

Often Self Care is broken down into a handful of elements and I find, especially at start, that this helps make taking on Self Care a more digestible task rather than something you dread or develop more anxiety over.

You can find Self Care falls into the following segments: mental, environmental, emotional, spiritual and physical.  When getting a routine for Self Care established, you’ll ideally involve multiple elements to avoid ‘restriction’ which can also lead to lack of follow through. These should be enjoyed and should not be something that is horrifically daunting rather than provide eager anticipation. Initiating and committing to a personal Self Care ritual is so empowering and quickly will reflect your ability to fulfill your own needs rather than depending on others to fill your cup.

At TKM, our motto is Indulge with Intention and of course that spills into making smart choices for our planet, our community and ourselves without any of the weight attached we’ve been expected to carry like guilt or additional stress. We invite customers to indulge in the best that life has to offer.

Self care is an essential part of living a healthy and balanced life. To kickstart your self-care journey, the first step is to check in with yourself. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and do a head to toe scan of your body. Take note of any areas that need special attention and give yourself permission to take care of them.

Where are you uncomfortable or in pain? Listen to your body and it will continue to speak with you through intuition and physical manifestations. In a society that we may have been trained to memorize and mirror ‘acceptable’ behaviors, to use the “Power of Your Mind”, try to shift instead to a perspective of “Trust Your Gut”. Are your shoulders tighter during the work week? Do you have back pain when working approaching deadlines? Does your stomach end up in knots when thinking about or being in the presence of some friends or even certain family members? Take note and LISTEN.

It's no secret that being in tune with your body is important for overall health and wellness. Thankfully, it's never been easier to get in touch with our physical selves and we will go over so much of this in coming weeks. With the help of simple exercises and mindful awareness, you can unlock a whole range of possibilities to help manage stress, navigate difficult situations and ultimately release tension. Don’t waste time and resources on someone telling you wha you need to do… at the end of the day, it’s your journey and no one else can help you figure it out. It’s up to you to make things happen!

Stop avoiding the stuff that's draining you and instead commit to the confrontation to make long-lasting changes! If you start with inconsistency or simply using distractions from the issues, you quickly will end up back in the same position - results will be a clear reflection of your efforts!

Think “chiropractor” here, you can get an adjustment once every couple months but that does nothing but temporarily realign only to let everything settle back into the wrong position. If you think long term, execute your plan and make progress little by little consistently you eventually have settled appropriately and thus ‘correct’ the position long term.  You need to become aware of not just what your body is telling you is wrong but acknowledging and embracing when it feels rectified. You need to realign your soul’s primary position of JOY.

Don't get your hopes up too high when starting your journey. It's going to take some time to see which strategies or tactics work best and which don’t! Be prepared for a bit of trial & error before you get the results you want and need, like all worthwhile things in life. You might think taking a dance class will help you ‘overcome’ some social anxieties but you’re 5 sessions deep only to realize it's the same or worse level of anticipated stress. You gave it a go and it didn’t work for you. Don’t let that discourage you, analyze what PART of this didn’t work for you and just keep it moving!   Maybe it was too intimate of a setting so instead you pivot and commit to frequenting museums on the weekend …you find you really love it, even start joining the tour groups. Embrace the adventure instead of focusing on the destination. The key is to try something NEW, same old same old is not working and CHANGE is not as scary as it may seem. Have you ever said “I wish I was brave enough to try that” or “That sounds like fun but…”? Take that and RUN with it. You are as brave as you allow yourself to be. What is the worst that can happen? As soon as you understand that it's not the be-all and end-all of life, and that failing doesn't define you, it's easier to have the courage to say YES more often.

Once you find your things, your place, your Tribe… you may start to feel some guilt creep up because your time isn’t being spent ‘productively’ by societal standards, there isn’t a monetary surplus from this activity, maybe it takes some time away from previous commitments or even relationships (which you weren’t loving to start with). Go into your personal journey with the mindset that YOU ARE WORTHY, you deserve to be whole and it is not just okay but necessary to take time individually to fill up with what ignites your soul!  Becoming a better human lends to improvement across all of your roles, titles and relationships. Acknowledging and accepting you not just need but deserve happiness on your terms is such a freeing and empowering experience. You DO NOT have to live by societal standards to be a ‘success’'; to be a functional member of society. Just because you have children doesn’t mean that you have to give up your whole identity for the following decades or just because you are a daughter doesn’t mean you need to put in all the work in your relationship with your parents, the list goes on. Fuck societal standards, WE are the change. The responsibility is with you and with me, rewriting ‘acceptable’ and embracing the individuality of what each human needs, empowering the ability to fulfill them ourselves.

Create boundaries, stick to them unapologetically, follow your instincts, and fill your own cup. You are worthy of happiness, joy and fulfillment. We will work on this together with the TK Tribe as a support but you have to commit to your own work. Rest assured, it’s also not all work. Taking a dance class is fun, sure but something as simple as investing in some TK Apothecary to get your daily routine started is a small step towards big change and we are here for it!

Self Care can help us to reduce stress, improve our focus and have more energy to do the things we love. It is important to take time out of our busy schedules to focus on ourselves, to prioritize our own needs with rest, relaxation, exercise, healthier eating and practicing mindfulness. These all aid us both physically and mentally which, let's be honest, is really a benefit for everyone that crosses our paths. There are so many different ways to practice Self Care, ranging from yoga, skincare routines or even journaling and we will dive deeper in the coming weeks. No matter how you arrange some self love into your day, it’s important to make sure you are doing something to take part in a happy and balanced life.

TK Modhemian + the TK Tribe is here to guide and join this journey with you.
